8 | I. The Incipience of Inception
Beyng, as the abyss of donation, attunes the steadfastness of being-there into the inceptive fundamental attunement of thinking.
Beyng, and only beyng, is. But sometimes beyng is in that it itself allows the clearing as time-space to emerge as the appropriative event of the in-between. There is no “time” that would precede and follow on from beyng and that could serve as a way of ordering. The timeless is not the eternal but is rather the partedness [Abgeschiedenheit] of inception into concealment. This is the refusal of the word.
The abruptness of inception and of the event corresponds to the fissuring of the parting [Abschied] into the singularity of concealment.
Technical and historiographical calculus (which are of the same essence) have robbed us of every capacity to think time, as time-space, from out of the truth of beyng, and truth itself as the event of inception.
Because beyng is and because only beyng is (beyng, that is, of the essence of evental inception), beyng must therefore also {GA 70: 16} not be. As long as it is not, it is neither time, nor yet the nothing, because the nothing unfolds in beyng and time is the essential unfolding of its truth. Therefore, no period of time can be measured in which beyng escapes into remoteness. The not-being of beyng cannot be determined historiographically but must rather be thought as an essential decisive separation [Wesensentscheid], refusing determination. But this only increases what is disconcerting in the abruptness of beyng, which likes to hide in the continuity of beings. Abruptness is the fundamental trait of the time of pro-jecting in which beyng appropriates the human. The technical and historiographical present initially insurmountable obstacles to awakening the knowledge of beyng as inception.
Beyng is inception.
Incipience is the taking and holding-to-itself of the entrance into the abyss and the taking hold that hovers in the in-between.
Incepting is the concealment into the parting.
This concealment is the inceptive, essential unfolding of truth.
Truth is the appropriative eventuation of being-there.
Appropriative eventuation belongs to the appropriative event.
The appropriative event is the incipience of inception, in as much as this incipience, as the inceptively nothing-less, detaches itself over against beings, and in such an “against” lets beings stand forth into the there. The event is beyng.
