14 | I. The Incipience of Inception
For all of us, coming from the metaphysical tradition and locked into its calculus, beyng is already difficult enough, indeed barely thinkable. For beyng demands the rejection of the support of every kind of analogy. The hasty resort, which wants beyng to explain or clarify itself from something else, is the real going astray. For this other of beyng is always only beings. Besides, beyng brooks no shifting into analogy, for it—and it alone—is the claim and the word and the attuning itself.
Beyng itself can alone be named, it itself is the telling. And the difficulty, for the chattering human, is to find enough in an essential word for steadfastness in the inceptive.
Nor is beyng that which makes everything possible, insofar as, in the making-possible, what is immediately thought is the reference to actuality and to actualizing; beyng is not the unconditioned, but neither is it the conditioned. Beyng is not the highest, nor the lowest; being is just beyng, and this says: inception.
But now, more difficult still than the subservience to beyng itself and the renunciation of equivalence to beings, is the twisting-free of beyng even into the incipience of inception.
What this twisting-free demands is a disposition that remains, simply, decided on the singularity of inception. And it is precisely this destitution in disposition that will be most difficult for the calculative-metaphysical essence to enter into, insofar as this destitution holds within it the unceasing richness of the inceptive that allows us to await its incipience—waiting, though, not for the arrival of a being but for the distance of the parting. {GA 70: 24} The waiting, and the keeping watch, are no non-possession or wanting-only-to-possess, or indeed any “possessing” at all; rather, they are the attunedness to the attuned voice of the attuning itself, the belonging to the incepting, the acknowledgment of the dignity in which all happens as inception, the not-needing of “power” and, thus, the leave-taking from all the beingness of beings.
The essence of beyng is inception. The incipience of inception is the parting. Incipience is the event of receding. Receding is the intimacy of incipience. The parting is the still distant arrival of the concealing of the safeguarding in inception of the advancing-away.
