10. Beyng as Staying | 17
As the inter-vening of the in-between, the appropriative event is the calling-forth of the nothing-less into being, in order that it be a being. Beings thus rise up into themselves. In that they are given over to being, beings appropriate being in such a way that they henceforth present themselves as that which bears and brings forth being and thereby become the measure and foundation for the determination of being, which is thus configured as beingness. Beings thus rise up (as appropriative event) over against being. This uprising happens from out of inception and belongs to it in such a way that inception risks, in this uprising, the burying of the truth of beyng. This danger is keenest in that it disguises itself by making it appear that only in this way would being be made worthy. Metaphysics is preoccupied with this appearance.
As soon as being unconcealed itself as presencing, its essence was mistaken for constancy.
And since, at about the same time, non-being appeared as its alternative, being had to be understood as what stays. The theological-causal interpretation of beings did the rest, establishing the eternal as what is proper to beings.
Whether one places being after becoming or whether one gives the latter precedence, it is in any case the staying that is henceforth the determining mark.
But the essence of staying is equivocal; in presencing, there is already an ambiguity as to whether it should be taken transitionally, as emergence toward egress, or whether, as what has arrived [Angekommenheit], it is rigidified into the constancy of what is present. If presencing is determined inceptively from emergence, then the staying cannot be grounded in the first inception, because that inception still covers over its incipience. However, if the incipience of inception is thought as the essential ground of the staying, then the staying becomes the not-letting-go of inceptuality, and is thus not determined by duration and continuity. On the contrary: its distinguishing mark is precisely the not-advancing-away
