Heidegger Conversations in Vigo

Meetup

We will be reading and discussing Martin Heidegger's lecture "What Is That – Philosophy?". Heidegger delivered it in August 1955, at Cerisy-la-Salle, Normandy. It inaugurated a week long seminar introducing Heidegger's way of thinking to French philosophers. Heidegger asks: what do we mean by philosophy?

The discussion will primarily be in English. Everyone is welcome. Explaining Heidegger's way of thinking can get quite technical quite quickly. We will try to keep the discussion oriented toward the everyday world.

Our venue will be:
Royal Café Atlántico
Calle Policarpo Sanz 11, near Porta do Sol, Vigo, Spain
from 11:00 to 13:00 on May 9, 2026.

Heidegger's lecture was published in his collection Identität und Differenz in 1957. It is now volume 11 of his complete works, the Gesamtausgabe. This text is available in a multi-lingual version (German-English-Galego-Português).

Two translations have been published in English. "What is Philosophy?" translated by Jean T. Wilde and William Kluback in 1958. "What Is That – Philosophy?" translated by Eva T. H. Brann in 1991.

A Spanish translation ¿Qué es eso de filosofía? by Adolfo P. Carpio was published in 1960 in Buenos Aires. In 2023 a new translation ¿Qué es la filosofía? by Jesús Adrián Escudero was published in Barcelona.
